Gegenpressing, usually translated as counter-pressing, is the tactic of pressing the opponent immediately after losing possession. The idea, popularised by Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, is simple: the moment your team loses the ball, the opponent is at their most disorganised, with players out of their defensive shape and facing their own goal. Those first five seconds are the best moment to win it back.

The logic is about transition, not just effort. When a team wins possession, its players naturally spread out to attack, leaving spaces between them. If the team that just lost the ball swarms the new ball carrier with two or three nearby players, the opponent has no time to find a safe pass. Win the ball there, high up the pitch, and you are already close to goal with the defence out of position.

Successful gegenpressing is highly organised, not chaotic running. Teams set pressing traps, guiding the opponent's play toward a particular zone, often the touchline, where space is limited. The nearest player presses the ball carrier, teammates cut off the passing lanes, and the rest of the team pushes up to squeeze the space. If one player presses alone while others rest, the press fails and leaves gaps behind.

Fitness and mentality are the price of this style. Counter-pressing demands repeated sprints, sharp decision-making under fatigue, and total buy-in from attackers who must defend the moment possession is lost. Teams that press well train it relentlessly, because a half-hearted press is worse than no press at all: it exhausts players while handing the opponent space to play through.

Opponents have learned to counter the counter-press. Playing out with quick one-touch passes, using a goalkeeper comfortable with the ball at his feet, and targeting the space behind an aggressive press with early long balls can all punish a team that over-commits. The best pressing sides therefore vary their intensity, pressing hard in some phases and dropping into a compact block in others.

For fans watching a match, gegenpressing is easy to spot once you know what to look for. Watch the five seconds after a team loses the ball: do two or three players immediately sprint toward the ball carrier, or do they jog back into shape? The answer tells you whether the team is genuinely counter-pressing or simply defending in the usual way.

A famous example makes the mechanics vivid. In Jurgen Klopp's Borussia Dortmund, the counter-press was triggered the instant possession was lost, with the nearest two or three players swarming the ball carrier while the rest of the team pushed up to compress the space. The opposition, having just won the ball and begun to spread out for an attack, suddenly found itself surrounded, facing its own goal, with passing lanes closed. Dortmund would win the ball back within seconds, often thirty or forty yards from the opponent's goal, and attack before the defence could reorganise. Liverpool later refined the same idea with a more structured press, using triggers such as a pass to a full-back or a poor first touch to launch coordinated waves. Both teams showed that gegenpressing is not about running more than the opponent in general; it is about running hardest in the five seconds that matter most, and doing it together.

Gegenpressing changed modern football because it turned defending into attacking. It rewards teams that are fit, brave, and tactically disciplined, and it punishes teams that switch off in transition. Whether it remains dominant depends on how well opponents keep solving it, but its core lesson endures: the best time to attack is the moment you have just lost the ball.
